Bio-isobutanol is a breakthrough biofuel that can be blended with gasoline in higher concentrations, works with today's cars and fuel infrastructure, and can improve refinery economics. What's more, this advanced biofuel can be conveniently produced in retrofitted ethanol plants.
Butamax, the leading bio-isobutanol technology company, and Highwater Ethanol, a leading producer of first generation ethanol, announced the start of Phase 1 of a retrofit of Highwater’s plant in Lamberton, Minnesota for the production of bio-isobutanol on October 2, 2013. The cutting-edge separation technology package includes a novel corn oil removal system and is an integral part of a full retrofit to bio-isobutanol production. Construction is now complete and the facility is in full operation.
Bio-isobutanol is as safe as existing fuels and offers numerous advantages:
- Allows higher blends – Can be blended with gasoline at 16%, helping producers overcome the blendwall
- True "drop-in" fuel – No modifications required to cars or fuel infrastructure
- Can be made in current ethanol plants – Leverages existing investments and enables rapid scale-up

- Adaptable to future feedstocks – Including cellulosics
Additionally, bio-isobutanol improves ethanol-gasoline blends and offers production costs near energy parity with ethanol.
More Renewable Content, Same Compatibility
Butamax bio-isobutanol technology is safe for use in current and existing vehicles and fuel dispensers, and offers fuel economy comparable to that of a 10% volume ethanol blend ("E10"). Bio-isobutanol enables the same renewable energy content as E20 while simultaneously meeting E10 compatibility standards.
Regulatory Approvals and Market Acceptance
Butamax is collaborating with stakeholders along the entire value chain to ensure the successful introduction of bio-isobutanol and bio-isobutanol co-products. This includes state and federal regulatory agencies, automotive manufacturers, fuel marketers, and certification agencies such as UL and ASTM.
Our work has included extensive testing of bio-isobutanol, with more than 1.5 million vehicle road-miles logged. In these tests, Butamax has proven that our advanced biofuel demonstrates excellent vehicle performance when blended into fuels at a 16% volume.
