Biobutanol has been tested over tens of millions of vehicle road-miles and made its public demonstration debut in a BP biofuel showcase at the 2012 Olympic Games.
24% Bio-Isobutanol Publicly Demonstrated
Butamax’s bio-isobutanol made its public demonstration debut at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. There, a BP biofuel showcase featured 24% bio-isobutanol made from corn blended into gasoline. This incredibly advanced blend—created at our demonstration plant in Hull, U.K.—was made possible by Butamax’s proprietary microorganism that ferments plant sugars to specifically produce bio-isobutanol. Innovative biofuel test pumps housing the 24% bio-isobutanol blend offered VIPs a fully automated drive-through fill-up experience in Hammersmith, U.K.
Cellulosic ethanol from grass plants and sugar-to-diesel made from the conversion of sugarcane into bio-oil were also made available.
Throughout July and August 2012, BP—an event partner of the 2012 Olympic Games—provided fuel containing bio-isobutanol to a fleet of over 5,000 automobiles to ferry VIPs and athletes around the games. To complement the interactive pumping demonstration, the BP biofuel showcase also included an engaging multi-media display that helped to further enhance the overall participant experience.
This extensive public demonstration showcased bio-isobutanol's capabilities in future blends, and illuminated how bio-isobutanol is revolutionizing the next generation of biofuels.
Biobutanol on Real Roads, in Real Cars
The Butamax fuels technology program began in 2006 to promote biobutanol adoption in the marketplace. Extensive testing was completed in both the U.S. and Europe, providing real-world confirmation through favorable results from laboratory, engine and vehicle demonstrations. With more than 1.5 million vehicle road-miles carefully logged, Butamax has proven that bio-isobutanol exhibits excellent vehicle performance when blended into fuels at a 16% volume, and can be successfully blended at volumes up to 24%.
In a U.K. retail demonstration, there were approximately 250,000 vehicle fill-ups and 80 million vehicle road-miles driven with no compromise in automotive performance.
Bio-isobutanol offers a high refining blend value based on its low vapor pressure, high octane and favorable distillation properties. It also offers a logistics benefit as it can be blended at the refinery with the resultant blends shipped via pipeline.

Since bio-isobutanol’s energy content is closer to that of gasoline, it can be blended in with no compromise on fuel economy. Even better, high blend concentrations of biobutanol require no vehicle modifications!
